What we’re talking about:

My guest this week is Myf, and she completed a Bachelor of Arts/Science at Monash followed by a Master of Speech Pathology at The University of Melbourne.

Double Degrees Help You Explore More Options

In high school, Myf studied mostly Maths and Science subjects, and when she finished school she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do in her career. Because of that, she chose to do a double degree in Arts and Science, which allowed her to explore a huge range of options before deciding on her majors (Chemistry, Biology and Linguistics). We discuss the benefit of double degrees and why we both think they’re a great option for students who aren’t quite sure what they want to pursue yet.

English Language and Linguistics

Myf did the VCE subject English Language at school, and loved it because of the way it allowed her to unpack how language works. Later when she was at uni, she continued to explore this area of language by majoring in Linguistics in her Arts degree. During one of the lectures, they discussed the careers you could pursue with a Linguistics major, and her interest in speech pathology was born. Myf explains what linguistics is and what she studied at uni.

What is Speech Pathology?

After Myf finished her double degree, she chose to do a Masters of Speech Pathology at The University of Melbourne. She explains the difference between her experiences in her Bachelor degrees and her Masters, and outlines the placements she did as part of her Masters that gave her an insight into the different settings where speech pathologists work. She explains what speech pathologists do, and explains what she does in her day-to-day work as a speech pathologist in schools.
