What we’re talking about:

My guest today is Lauren, and she is the Associate Head of School Teaching and Learning at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin University. She shares such great insights into nursing in this episode as she discusses her career as a nurse as well as the courses offered at Deakin and why they have such a great reputation.

How Lauren became a nurse

Lauren grew up on a farm in rural Victoria and was initially interested in studying Sport at uni, but when she and her family went to the Nursing session at the Deakin Open Day while they were waiting for the session on Sport, she was much more interested in what they had to say than she thought she’d be. She added Nursing at Deakin to her preference list and ended up getting into the course, and she’s never looked back. Lauren shares her experiences throughout her career as a nurse which is a great insight into the range of roles a nurse can take.

Mentoring and teaching

After a number of years as a nurse, Lauren realised she enjoyed mentoring the young nurses as they started their career and decided that she would do some further study so that she could pursue teaching. While she soon recognised that teaching in secondary school wasn’t for her, a position as a lecturer at Deakin came up and Lauren was able to combine her love of teaching and nursing in this role. She gives us an insight into her career trajectory throughout her time at Deakin.

Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin

Lauren discusses nursing in general including details about flexibility within the profession, income and the range of roles you can pursue as a nurse. She also gives us an insight into how Deakin has been able to maintain an excellent reputation here and overseas in the nursing field. Lastly, she goes into detail about the courses available at Deakin, the opportunities available within the courses to gain some experience and explore what your career might look like, and how you might know that it’s the right career for you.
