What we’re talking about:

My guest today is Marni, and she’s completing a double degree in Science and Global Studies at Monash, majoring in Environmental Science and International Relations. As well as discussing her course and what she’s been studying, we talk a lot about the amazing range of experiences that Marni has had throughout high school and at uni, and how each one has helped her learn more about herself and what she wants to achieve.

How curiosity can lead you to great opportunities

Marni has always been a curious person, even as a small child. This played out in the experiences she had at school as she chose to explore different subjects and opportunities. We discuss how being curious at school can help you do really well in subjects that you’re interested in and discover things you want to study further instead of just ticking the boxes of what your teachers want you to do to get a good mark on an assignment. Throughout high school and at uni, Marni has had a huge range of fantastic experiences such as travelling overseas for different programs, Model UN, and holding various roles in the Monash Student Association.

Science and Global Studies at Monash

When looking at courses in Year 12, Marni had two strong interests - Science (particularly Biology), and International Relations. She had dreams of helping the world combat climate change and was looking at courses in one or the other area, until she found a double degree where she could combine both her passions. Marni gives us an insight into Science and Global Studies at Monash including what she’s been studying and how the course works, as well as the opportunities she’s had to explore what her future career could look like. She also explains how Monash’s Global Immersion Guarantee works.

Monash Student Association

Marni has held various roles in MSA throughout her time at uni, and she explains that the role of the MSA is to make sure that student life is as good as it can be, including facilitating clubs, activities and ways to make sure that all students are included and feel safe and accepted at uni. Not only is the work rewarding and has a real impact on learning at Monash, it also gives members great opportunities to challenge themselves and grow as leaders and change makers.
