What we’re talking about:

Choosing VCE subjects and planning your tertiary pathway can feel overwhelming — especially when you’re worried about closing off future options. In this episode of Course and Career Chat, I share the stories of four students who were unintentionally limiting their choices because of assumptions about what they could or couldn’t do. You’ll hear how, once they had the right information, they were able to make informed decisions about their VCE subjects, courses, and career pathways — and feel confident about their next steps.

1:00 Penny’s story

Penny, a Year 11 student, loves Art and anything creative. We started by exploring Fine Art and Art Curatorship courses, along with pathways into the creative industries. But as we talked, it became clear there was something more she really wanted to do. When her mum joined the conversation and mentioned Architecture, Penny admitted that her real dream was to become an architect, town planner or interior designer — but she’d dismissed those options because she thought they were too hard to get into. Once we unpacked the entry requirements and looked at all her options, she realised that her goals were absolutely achievable. Having the full picture helped Penny make an informed decision about her VCE subjects and keep her creative career dreams alive.

5:30 – Hailey’s Story
Hailey wanted to become a doctor but was told her learning difficulties would stop her from doing the VCE prerequisites. Together, we explored not only alternative health pathways but also ways she could still pursue Medicine — through undergraduate or graduate routes. With clear information about entry requirements and subjects like Chemistry and Biology, Hailey regained control of her future.

10:50 – Two More Stories
Two Year 11 boys were considering leaving school early to take on a trade. Their parents worried about how that choice might affect their career options. We mapped out the pathways available with and without completing Year 12 — helping each student make a fully informed decision that suited their individual goals.

Key Takeaway

When students make VCE or course decisions based on assumptions or fear, they risk cutting off opportunities that might be perfect for them. Getting accurate, personalised information helps them make informed decisions — and discover more pathways than they ever realised were possible.
