You want to support your child, but you’re confused about how VCE works.
VCE is a whole beast.
Our society makes it out to be the end all be all for our teenagers (and it’s not, I promise!) but the reality is that it’s the system we have, and if you’re here, it means your child is about to go through it.
And while you can tell your child that their worth isn’t tied up to their ATAR, and that they’ll be able to pursue whatever career they want no matter what happens, it’s really hard for them to believe it while they’re drowning in assessment and wondering where they’re ranked in their class.
The best way that I’ve found to support students going through VCE, is to understand how it works yourself so that you can speak their language and be in it with them.
So how does VCE work?
VCE is the system we have in Victoria for students in their final years of high school. It spans Year 11 and Year 12 (and sometimes starts as early as Year 10 for students who accelerate), and a student’s results will dictate how they can start on the pathway to their career.
